Here's why I vote democrat using a similar analogy:
Student A is the son of the Dean of the college. He gets a 4.0 GPA because of his father's influence with the teachers and the fact that he knows his father's password for the master gradebooks. He cheats on his tests, and he barely studies at all.
Student B is working a full-time job to merely attend college. She studies hard for all her classes, but when Student A copies from her test, she is the one who is accused of plagiarism. After all, how could it be Student A? He is the son of the Dean, and she has a 4.0. Her teachers are unsympathetic, and she is told that her situation is her own fault for not working hard enough. Besides, it's proven that students with low GPAs are more likely to cheat.
I ask you: how, exactly, is this a fair system?

Statistically the first scenario is more common than the second. I'm not saying that the current system is a good one, but Universities are private businesses and already receive a bung ton of cash from the government anyway.
It's the classic argument between capitalism and socialism. People who are rich (many of them) have worked hard to get where they are, why should they pay a higher percentage than those below them? After all its their money, what right does the government have to take more from them than anyone else?
On the flip side, the so called working class works dancing daffodills hard to just stay alive. Labor is no small thing. Why should they pay a higher percentage than the rich? After all the rich have money to spare, don't they? They don't need all those extra houses or the Ferrari or that private jet. We deserve more.
There is no perfect system. I'm no economist but I think a flat tax would be better than nothing. The taxes on the low and middle income families would most likely drop in total amount, whereas the extremely wealthy would end up paying more in total dollars. We know from experience that the republican idea of wealth trickling down doesn't work. the cash merely moves from one CEO's hands into another. However we do need to make sure that there is still incentive to get at those high class jobs, such as doctors, scientists, CEOs, politicians. None of those jobs are easy, and the money reflects that.
Round and round and round it goes, you can't make everyone happy.
Flat tax ftw.
