in a no holds barred, toe to toe showdown between the two universes, who would win? why? Should The Skywalker clan be exterminated for excessive whining? Prepare to be owned

You will have to be a lot more specific on the timelines of each period and where they are. For example, the original Star Trek starring William Shatner as Kirk. Or the Enterprise D with Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean Luc Picard? Same goes for Star Wars.
It would be hard, but I would actually give it to Star Trek, depending on the time frame.

I vote Star Trek too because while Star Wars has lasers and The Force, Star Trek has sheilds and photon torpedos and warp drive. Of course, we all know that afterwards BSG would come and tromp both of them.

Let's leave out other series and discuss those at hand.
If you will remember, the Death Star had shields and the bigger ships had 'warp' capability as well. And you know what's better than photon torpedos? The capability to destroy entire planets and ships.
The only thing about Star Trek that I would have to say would win hands down is the Borg and the species that can travel through fluidic space from the Voyager series.

Star Trek timline Enterprise - E (Post voyager) Star wars whatever is the latest deal, lol. The thing that tru,ps it for star trek, IMO, is actually 2 things. 1: matter transmisison (transporters) and 2 the ability to engage sub light targets while moving faster than light. To say nothing odf superior weapons range and accuracy. bascially the sovereign class starships would tromp anythign that star wars could throw at them.

Eddie Izzard makes a few good points about it. There's a bit of language... but I like it. Only true fans (like myself) can appreciate what he's saying. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbOC0uoKYtU

If we are talking about the federation, then it is a big toss up for the simple fact that Star Wars relies on numbers. Its hard for one ship to try and target 120 smaller ships flying around them while getting their shields beat down by the bigger ship. The only problem I see for Star Wars would be that the massive transports and larger ships don't have shields and that their technology is lacking in the defensive department. The major win for the Star Trek is the transporter technology and the Cutter Beam that the Federation stole from the Borg. However, in defense for Star Wars, they have far superior firepower and mass numbers and their troops are grown. So the only way I can see Star Trek winning is if they went in and immediately destroyed as many of the carrier ships as possible before being swarmed and beaten down. Though if the Federation weren't such panzies and decided not to make cloaking technology, even though they came up with one which would allow them to phase through matter while being cloaked, for example being able to hide within a planet itself, just for the sake of being at peace with the Romulan Empire... Ugh. Hurray for Trekkies and Star Wars Nerds. EDIT: I am not like you and I appreciate what he said... True fan, yes. True fans speak of the technical aspects of Star Trek, so

No no no. Starships can target shuttlecraft without issue. swarms of nearly unshielded fighter craft would be no problems. Phasers are near light speed particle weapons. that means a pilot would have no chance to dodge the dancing daffodills things. Plus set a ship's phaser on wide beam and BAM fighter swatter. From thousands of kilometers away. A starship was destroyed buy a Nebula class ship from over 200,000 km. the farthest a star wars ship has been seen to fire from is, oh yeah, VISUAL RANGE. The ST ships wouldn't even have to come into weapons range of the Star wars vessel while completely toasting them. And superior firepower? FAIL. Photon torpedoes have enough yeild to vaporize asteroids. AS SEEN IN THE SHOW. plus again there's warp strafing which Star wars ships have no counter.

I would say that if you gave Star Wars ample time to catch up technologically wise, they would give Star Trek a run for their money because let's be realistic - the Star Wars series was very close together time length wise and they never really developed new technology.
However, the Star Trek series was given plenty of time to develop and research new weaponry as well as defensive capabilities.
So all in all, I would say if Star Wars was given as much time to develop as Star Trek was, then it would be an even fight. Though if it was Enterprise-E style Federation against Episode 6 Star Wars, then yes, Star Trek would win.
