I'll try to be there Saturday. Working full time tends to cramp one's schedule.

The majority of my teachers have not seen it, but there appears to be some kind of underground judging system, because they all say that it is getting really really good reviews.

Overall, I enjoyed the play as all of the characters were well played. Jack needed to stop looking at the audience in the beginning though he came through for me in the end.
I would have to say that my two favorite characters in this play were first the Baker and then the Witch. Followed by the Wolf, the Baker's Wife and the Two Prince's.
I think Nick did a fantastic job at the both of his parts and the wolf was just great. Loved the outfit. Everyone had amazing voice's except for probably Jack, but he played the part ofa child very well to make up for it.
The witch had an amazing voice which really made me happy because her solo song, "The Last Midnight," was one of my favorites and she pulled it off beautifully.
Although, the only negative aspect of my review was of the Prince and the Baker's Wife. Now knowing Klem the way I do, I doubt he choreographed it. The first two kisses should've been simple attempts, followed by a peck and then the passionate one as the Baker's Wife gave in. Then the following scene where the Prince is on top of the Baker's Wife, was too much in my honest opinion. If this were a show that mostly adults attended, then sure but not for a High School production. Should've had the Prince come out looking all dashing and macho as he normally is and have the Baker's Wife walk out with her hair in a mess and clothes a little messed up. Then have her walk to the Prince and fondle over him as he turns away and deliver's his "Well, it's been fun." And then exit.
My opinion of course, but you not only perform to make the money and have a good time, but to attract others to the Drama program and if the parents find the scenes to be a bit sketchy they might be even more hesitant to let their children attend the class.
So other then the one scene and opening of the other, it was a play well worth the money I didn't pay.

...Actually, Klem choreographed it. That was quite an embarrassing accusation - Chris and I would not do that of our own accord. And, in fact, his first kiss is gentle. So happy that you support us all and paid. ...So that really hurts.

I haven't seen it but BAH. Suggestive dialogue and situations are plenty acceptable in high school productions They're high schoolers ffs.

Echo, Klem did choreograph that scene. I was there when he did it, so don't you dare say that Dark and Raiku do what they do on stage because they want to. It is actually really mild compared to what is in the actual script. And by the way, if they do what you suggest then the only thing that you can think is: "They just had sex." Where as, the way they do it now you automatically think "they just had a make out session." When the scene was first choreographed the only people who were comfortable were the ones watching the scene. Dark and Raiku didn't actually start putting the actual kissing in that scene until a week before the first performance. Thanks for paying. We appreciate it so much.

Wow, make a negative comment and get pounced on. Alright, now here's my retort:
First of all, from what I have gathered about Klem and his directing, that seemed a bit too far from his normal direction for me to take it as his work. Though if he did indeed do it, I'd disagree with the direction in which he took it.
And though I do care, I don't have the money to pay for a ticket. It's all about the bills and growing up while snagging an apartment. So it was either sneak in or not go. I took the first of the two and decided to see an amazing play.
And no, little one, with the Prince lying on top of the Baker's Wife, it was not a message being broadcasted of "Oh, they just made out for awhile." The only thing missing to completely ensure the message that they had sex would be if her legs were spread and he was tightening his belt on his pants. Believe me as I was there long after the show with several others critiquing the play. As good as it was, that was my only negative feedback. Besides Jack, but as I said he came through for me in the end. Though only a few of us didn't enjoy the scene opening with the Prince lying on top of the Baker's Wife, but everyone else didn't mind the kissing. Leave it to the mind of a nympho to find something prude about a play. 8)

*siiiiigggghhhh* He wasn't on top of me. But, see it as you like. Sorry you don't like it. Actually, I was surprised myself when Klem had direction to it. You're right, he usually does not have anything to do with scenes like that. However, this scene, because it is vitally important to the moral issues brought up in the play, he directed every part of it. I found it to be rather comforting, actually - I would have felt very awkward having to come up with a way to get around the direction in the script (("In another part of the woods: lights come up on Baker's Wife and Cinderella's Prince, who are rolling on the ground, kissing")). Though I think it would have been funny if we did it differently, I think I agree with Silent's comment... wouldn't that seem even more suggestive than what is actually done...? Because with what is directed now, you catch the characters in the middle of the act, not after the fact - so it doesn't leave you wondering what exactly went on. *Shrug* That's just my take on it. I asked multiple people who had seen the play, and that's what I got from them.
I'm not attacking you, Echo. You bring up an interesting point. The way your post reads, however, did sound like an accusation, and it stung. That's all.

Yeesh, folks. Lighten up.
A. I believe I was the one who originally suggested the alternate direction, and it was merely a "this is how I would have done it", and not meant as a direct criticism. C'mon Echo, credit where it's due!
B. I for one, think that the scene was quite tasteful. I didn't feel uncomfortable in the slightest. The BW had already established a bit of a crush on princes in general earlier in the show, so what y'all thought were "excessively passionate kisses" were actually perfectly in character, and I applaud Dark for committing to that level.
C. I felt that the strongest performances in the show (with a combination of singing talent and acting) were: the BW, Cinderella, the Princes, the Witch, and Little Red, in that order.
D. Dark, even if it wasn't the case, from the audience's POV it looked like he was on top of you. (but I'll reiterate that I had no problem with the scene itself)
E. And finally, my bit of constructive criticism: I wish that the diction had been a tad better on everyone's part. Especially so for the Witch, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and the Baker. There were several songs (most noticeably the duet between Rapunzel and the Witch) where I caught maybe 30% of the words. Which is sad, because in a Sondheim show the who point is in the words.
All in all, a terrific show with a strong cast. Much props to you all for pulling off such a challenging show in such a satisfying manner!
