So I was sitting at my desk organizing my work, and I'm curious as to the opinions of others on the site. What makes a character so cool? I mean, something that makes them stand out and make them memorable, someone you WANT to read about.
To me it's depth, giving a character a 3d persona, so to speak. Someone who has a story and a personality that doesn't change according to his/her environment.

Conflict and a soul. Conflict makes a character interesting, gives you something to work with, to improve, to reveal their faults as well as their strengths and the ability to overcome, or fail, against their obstacles. The soul makes them real, human, fallible. Without the soul, magus would be a two dimensional rawr nasty badguy who sits in a corner and blows things up and no one would like him. But with the sense of conscience, the limitation of his humanity, his belifs of right and wrong, he becomes able to attract friends. That's what I liked most about Zephyr when i created him. I didn't play him very well here, and I'd played him so long that i wanted to take a new shot at him.. But Zephyr wasn't just a thief and an immature brat who did nothing but grief others. He loved, he'd commited terrible acts and atoned for them, he'd protected the helpless form the tyrannic forces assailing them. He had a soul. I just ran out of conflict.

I agree with Zephyr. It does not matter what exactly the conflict is, but it needs to be resolved in some way, shape, or form. They need to know what it is they have to improve on and how to fix whatever problems they have.
I also usually enjoy having someone with two different sides of their personality - not bipolar, but just having conflict in their own thoughts. It makes them more human and easy to connect with.
