The rain came down hard, and the girl couldn’t see where she was going. It wasn’t that she had been hurt, or was running away, or anything like that. She had been walking home, enjoying the sunrays and warmth of the day when a huge storm lashed out, almost out of nowhere. The rain came without warning and didn’t start with a drizzle, it burst out in sheets, stinging the girl’s eyes. Her clothing was drenched, and the rain came down so hard that it began to tear the material. Where had the storm come from? Why couldn’t she have been somewhere safe when it collided with the sky? ‘Wait.’ She thought to herself, ‘that’s right…I wanted to be in the sun. I never prepared for a storm. I wanted the sun…’
‘Why can’t he see me?’ She thought to herself. ‘I’m right here. Every morning is like the other. No hello, no eye-contact even! We used to talk, why is it that we don’t now?’ She put her head on the desk and shut her eyes. The night had been filled with wonderful dreams, dreams that were filled with him, with him and her talking like friends…Like they used to.
She heard her name called. It was the teacher. “Will you answer the next question please?” She raised her head and looked at the board. Another girl answered the question, the other girl which shared her name. She slouched back into her chair.
She glanced back at him, just for a split second. Her mind filled with questions, her cheeks felt hot under her skin. She turned her head away and closed her eyes. This class was one that she could pass by sleeping every day, so she took her mind off the lesson and kept her eyes shut. She began tracing his face in her mind, adding every little detail. She knew his face, not because it was beautiful, but because it belonged to a friend. A friend she admired and longed to be closer to. A friend that brought warmth to her heart and a smile to her lips whenever she thought of him.
The bell rand, breaking her smile and her mental drawing. It was gone, as if her sketchbook had been thrown in the fireplace. She packed up her books with her usual blank and pale face. ‘I’ll just go and say hello.’ She thought. She approached him and said hello, but he gave no response. He turned his back and began walking away. She couldn’t understand this!
“Hey!” She called as she ran up to him. She tapped his shoulder. He turned and looked at her, but not in her eyes. He stared at her forehead. A look of confusion spread across his face and he looked around, as though he couldn’t see her. He turned back around and continued walking the other way.
She stood there, stunned. What had brought this on? Why had he ignored her? As these questions raced through her head a boy began approaching, talking with his friends. And they were headed right for her, not getting out of the way or anything. And she didn’t move. They didn’t waver. They walked right through her. She turned around and looked at them in amazement. She looked down at herself, but her body wasn’t there. Just a transparent glowing outline of one.
