Annie looked even more flustered than she had been before when Tion commented on the word 'roommate'. "No, no, no, honey... the word 'mate' is also a word for 'companion.' It means she lives in the same room that I do. That's all. Her name is Libby. Ali is an actress that I work for. She is a bit of a ditz... I'm not sure how she's been while I've been away. She can't do anything herself." By now they'd reached the ATM. Annie felt slightly uncomfortable as some of the others looked over her shoulder at what she was doing, but she needn't worry. It wasn't like they'd understand anything that was happening. Thank goodness she'd always kept her wallet on her person. She still had it after all those years in the other world. She put her card in the machine, punched in her PIN, and withdrew $60. Who knew what they'd want as keepsakes, anyway?
Naburine gasped in surprise when the money came spitting out. "That's your currency, right? All you have to do is stick a thing in there and money comes out?!?!"
"No.... It's complicated. Just know that you can't do it."
"Danggit."

"We're going to your place of work then," Magus asked, peering around. "I've never seen so many buildings so close together..."
"What did you do? Does it have to do with technogy?" asked Aramil with a tilt of his head.

"It has everything to do with technology, Aramil. You wouldn't understand." She tussled his hair and then turned to the blue-haired mage. "I think that's what we should do, yes. That would be the easiest way to know how long I've been gone."

The twins were immediately inspecting every inch of the ATM. "It might be complex to actually use, but if we think logically..."
"There is money inside. We just have to crack this baby open and then we will have everything we need." Naome finished with a smile.
Tion nodded looking thoughtful. "And it seemed to be made of parchment so as long as we dont use fire we should be ok. We have to cut through this metal though, that could take a while." He turned to the rest of the group, focusing hopefully on the magic users. "Or one of you could rip it open?"

Annie looked sternly at Tion. "Sweetie, that's not an option. We have people here who take you away and lock you up if you do anything like that. If you want something, tell me. I have hardly any use for this money anymore, since I'll be going back with you."
Naburine's gleaming eyes were not so gleamy anymore.
Dark crossed her arms and stared at the machine. She knew her fair share of alchemy, but she also knew that her sorcery didn't really work here, so why should alchemy? This was SOME sort of science, she knew that. "What substance was that... thing... that you put in there?"
Annie looked at her, slightly startled. Dark had been pretty quiet since they got there and she couldn't use her magic. Annie, still holding her card in her hand, looked down at it and then back up at the lovely woman. "Umm... this card is plastic."
"'Plastic...'" Dark looked confused. "It's a substance I've never heard of. Your people are very advanced." She looked at Magus. "You don't suppose you'd be willing to help me try to find the secret to this 'plastic' when we get home, would you? I think I'll be needing someone with more magical abilities - I usually stick to sorcery, not magery."

Were it not for Annie's statement about the guards taking people away, Magus might have been tempted to try and rip the machine open...
"Perhaps.. Let's let Annie have her reunion first though. There's no guarantee she'll ever be able to return here again."
It was fairly obvious that neither the ATM machine, nor the plastic held his interest. It seemed like people were taking notice of them now. Their outlandish clothes caused a few people to begin taking pictures of them, and strangers asked eachother whether a movie was being shot, or a convention was in town. Aramil's stomach gurgled. He had just eaten before coming through the portal, but all of a sudden he felt like he was almost starving. "I.. think I'm hungry," he remarked, looking questioningly down at his mid-section.

Dark shrugged at Magus, noting his lack of interest. "Nevermind, then." She laughed at Aramil's comment. "Yes, I'd say you are. You're usually hungry."
Naburine crossed to Aramil after a wistful look at the ATM and picked him up, placing him on her shoulders as she was wont to do. "It's okay, kid. We'll find something to eat. Until then, you can ride on my shoulders and wave at random people to take your mind off it."
There were lots of random people to be waved at. People were getting their Christmas shopping done, and lots of them were looking in their direction. Annie, getting slightly nervous at all the attention her friends were getting, rushed to get them out of any odd situation. "Okay... is there anyone else who's hungry? We have a couple different options depending on how many people I have to feed."

"It might be interesting to see what sort of food your world has to offer." The wizard answered. Aramil wondered when he'd be big enough to resist being hoisted around. The thought quickly left his mind when he waved to someone and they waved back in response.
"Momma, look at their ears!" cried a girl's voice in excitement. "Are they christmas elves?"

Naome jumped at the offer. "Oh! I'm starved. I want one of everything!"
"You are such a glutton." Tion looked at her in disgust as he returned to his place beside Annie and gently placed an arm about her waist. "Why don't you wait to see what there is first?"
~~~~~
Libby bit her lip as she looked at the cellphone in her hands. It had been a couple of weeks since Annie had dissapeared and she had called her three times a day every other day to see if she would pick up. She didnt know what to do. Her flatmate had just vanished into thin air!
No, roommate. You are in America now Libster! It is time to suck it up. I mean she cant be dead. I havent heard of any bodies being found. You can do this. She closed her eyes and hit the call button.
Dark looked stunned. "Elves? What races of elves do you have here? You said you'd never seen one when you came to Ellaia..."
Annie shook her head. "No, no... they're all legend here. If someone asks, say they're fake."
"...Fake ears...?" What did these people do in their spare time?
Annie put the money in her wallet and pulled out the magic plastic card again. "Okay... since a lot of you are hungry, I suppose we could go to a restaurant. I need to check something else on that machine if we're going to do that, so I need you to move, Nabu..."
Everyone in the party, including Annie, jumped at the sudden intrusion of jingle-like noises coming from Annie's person.
Annie fumbled around, looking for her phone and trying to remember who's ring tone that was. She'd been gone for so long... "Ohmigosh, Libby!" Out of a smaller pocket within her right jean pocket, she pulled out a small, bright pink phone.
Naburine had been in a perfect fight-stance, forgetting that it probably wasn't a good idea to use weapons in this strange world unless confronted. Luckily, she hadn't unsheathed anything. Her eyes widened and her frame relaxed when the pink thing was pulled from Annie's pocket.
Dark was not impressed. She had her hands over her ears and a grimace marred her features. "Such high-pitched, loud noises... how can something that small make such a rukus?"
Annie quickly flipped the phone open and put it up to her ear. "Hello? Libby?"
Naburine looked around, confused. "There's no one else he..."
"Yeah, it's Annie. What's up?"
Naburine was now thoroughly confused and slightly hurt that she'd been inturrupted by her best friend.
"What's that thing?" Aramil asked Annie, equally as oblivious about the cell phone. Magus didn't jump at the sound like the rest of the party seemed to, although it certainly stole his attention for a moment. "What is Libby?"
Naome looked at Magus and put on a mock school-teacher frown. "I do believe you mean whom. Libby sounds like it's supposed to respond so it's probably a person." Tion swiftly smacked her on the back of the head and told her to knock it off.
~~~
Libby's eyes flew open as she heard Annie's voice. "Annie?" Her voice cracked in disbelief. When the pink haired girl confirmed that it was her the red head felt the room spin. "You're alive!" and with that she let darkness take her as she fell to the floor.

"Of course I'm alive! How long have you thought I..." She heard a thump on the other end. "...Libby? Libby? Oh, great." She flipped the phone closed and sighed. "She probably fainted. Go figure. I'll have to see her soon, but first I want to get you all fed and go to the office. I guess we don't have to worry about getting you all different clothing - the people here seem to think you're part of the festivities in some odd way."
Naburine was looking about at all the other people at the moment. She decided not to even try to think about what was going on with that pink thing. Technology wasn't her forte. "I've never felt out of place like this before. They all have clothes like you, Annie. I'm so used to you being the odd one out."
"...Thanks," Annie muttered, sarcasm dripping from her lips. She manually moved Naburine with a gentle push and checked the state of her checking account. She'd be fine. There was a lot in there. "Okay, let's go."
"But you didn't get any more money..." Naburine seemed upset and confused at the same time.
"The plastic card will access it when I give it to the people in the restaurant," she said.
Naburine's eyes widened again, and her mask hid a slack-jawed mouth. "That plastic stuff IS the magic of your world!!"

(( aww, come on. You have to at least allot some time for new clothes shopping in the future. I should dress magus up in some gansta clothes...)) Magus followed solemnly, trying to ignore his increduluous allies while not drawing attention to himself. He'd rather not have to draw attention to himself any more than he is already. He didn't feel like testing the weapons of this world without access to his magic. Aramil followed Annie, because she was going the same way as his stomach. Not that he had much choice in the matter, NAburine's wonderment kept her hands clamped tightly around his legs.

"If you want down at any point, kid, let me know."
Annie took them into the Cat N Fiddle Pub and Restaurant, mainly because it was close. She had them taken to the restaurant side and she had them all sit in the cushy benches. It was close quarters, but at least everyone fit. They wouldn't know the difference between American and English food, so this wasn't a problem. She wondered if they could catch the Brit's accents, though, as the waiter talked to them while passing the menus out.
