...I think I would have to do more research to come up with a viable opinion. As it is now, I think that Michael is correct in his final statement when he says that we need to respect everyone's opinion and listen. I have yet to figure out exactly what it is. I have never fully understood it.

I need to do the same. It's a deep and politically defining issue. The cells could be used to save lives, I do know that. But at what cost? More research is required.

Stem Cell research, for those who don't know, is research into using the cells that are found in developing fetuses. Such cells have the capacity to turn into any type of cell in the body, including otherwise irreplaceable brain cells or nervous tissue.
Unfortunately the only source of stem cells (at least the most useful ones) is from human embryos that have not yet begun to really develop.
Personally I don't know what to think. As a general rule I'm against killing babies, but the sheer magnitude of what could be done with those cells is staggering. The blind could see, the crippled could walk, all that Jesus stuff. Except for walking on water. You still need some kind of anti grav field for that. But anyway. I digress.
I'd rather they find another way. Such as perhaps learning to clone such cells. But again we run into the problem of where live human embryos would have to be used in the research, probably tested to destruction.
Cybernetics ftw. Seriously, can't we all just build better robots?

Yeah. Or we could go with the lot God gave us like we've been doing for thousands and thousands of years. I like the idea of bettering our health and all... I just don't like the meathod in which it is being done. So, I agree with you, Det.

I agree, I would like to find a different method. While it is tempting to be able to do so much, and easy to write of an embryo as "not a life yet" I'm not sure i like the way this sounds. I'm a little wary of anything "Christ-like" that has nothing to do with God.

For the record, I did a report on this subject for college a while ago. There is a different way of doing it - the guy who started it all found it. He figured out a way to add a couple more genetic threads to an adult skin cell in order to create a cell almost identical to that of a stem cell. However, the other scientists that began to take up his original stem cell research idea don't want to do this.
Another "other way" is to harvest the millions of stem cells found in the placenta after the birth of the child. Waste not, you know? Unfortunately, nobody wants to do that, either, though it's the best way.

I wonder why? It's the obvious thing to do,so I can't understand why it won't be accepted? There must be a logical argument. Even if the government and science community is as corrupt as it seems as of late, to deny the compromise just makes no sense.
