A slight tingle floated in the air, a minor tickling sensation that felt like static emenated from the large device in the middle of the large chamber. The room was large enough, bigger than an average bedroom but not a ballroom either. It was basic stonebricked walls, but rather dark and eerie looking, just the way Magus liked it. Recently he had been rather reclused, hardly seen around the tavern and town as he was working on this device. When he did come out it was mostly at night, when he walked with Shivelle, or just needed some time to clear his mind or spend time with their son. The room was lit with wall-mounted torches that burned with a lovely violet and blue flame. The blue-haired mage scowled at the monstrous construction before him. It was not the construct he scowled at, for it was his masterpiece so far. A large ring of white-mithril and blue adamantine stood boldly from the intricate platform beneath, made of similar metals. The entire thing was about fifteen feet high, and took up the entirety of the wallspace in width. Various gems and panels, bolts and wires adorned it all over. Indeed it was a very impressive device, a mixture of science and the arcane. Now all there was to do is test it.
Still, even though his creation was about to be tested and perfected, his was behaving rather snappishly. PErhaps it was because the assemblence of colleagues and partners he'd been working with seemed to have grown thricefold today. Dark, Annie, the gnome, the goblin, and the Mages that came here recently seemed to have brought some attention to themselves, and the room was filled with an excess of lifeforms. Rubric looked sheepishly at Scheema, who promptly clonked him on the head. Aramil peered eagerly at the gate before the assembly, watching as the machine hummed quietly.

Leaning against a far wall, nearly lost in the crowd, stood Raiku, hood adorned. His arms crossed, and his eyes set firmly on the device, studying the details as best he could. Science was never his interest, but one had to admit it did have some 'flash'. He brushed a lock of his long white hair out of his face and behind his ear. The lanterns pressed a shadow against his body, hiding the majority of his face and his trusty weapons. It was dark here, perhaps one thing Magus and Raiku had in common was their sense of style.
((Let's assume that this is the Raiku after the events in 'The Wanderer's back. Whereas, instead of being a doppelganger, this is, in fact, our lovable pirate buddy.))
Aegis stood to the side of the others, relatively close to Aramil. He had particularly less armor on than usual, expecting this to be a routine test of unknown and dangerous magical energy mixed with a dose of 'mad science'. Seems normal enough, he thought to himself.

Shivelle noted a hint of annoyance about Magus and instinctively took his hand and squeezed it. He had been working hard on this device, and she wanted to make sure that his first test went well in all aspects. Reid was asleep; it was late, and he had a long day. Toddlers got tired very easily in this village. He had been playing with Snowbird and Tai, who were now six years old and loved the little vampire like a brother. Shivelle looked over at the mother of the twins. Dark had been slightly more serious than normal lately. The vampiress figured that it was because of this project, which was understandable, but it was still odd to not have her even drop a sarcastic comment once in a while. The sorceress stood in her plain white robe belted at the waist, her many pouches hanging from it. Her long black hair was wavy about her shoulders and brought out her cerulean eyes, which were dancing with the reflection of the dim light. She looked lovely as always, but also very aware of what was going on. Shivelle had always liked her for that. She was an easy woman to have respect for.

Kimmy stretched and yawned from her position near the device. "Well I'm still not noticing anything unusual. So I dont think it will blow up until we turn it on. Are you sure you dont want me to help out?" The young looking red head looked up at Magus with hope filled eyes. She was dying for a chance to prove her worth. There was no way she could mess up everything she touched.

Dark smiled at Kimmy's request, but she said nothing. She would let Magus decide. She felt Shivelle's eyes on her, and her blue eyes turned to meet the red ones, connecting with them. She then winked with a perfectly straight face and looked away again, making Shivelle stifle a chuckle. This would be an interesting adventure.

"I would rather no one except those I invited here touch the device... especially not you," Magus said, giving Kimmy a warning gaze. "I'll begin." Turning on heel, the mage held out his arms at full length, and began chanting strange verses in a long since dead language. The Machine seemed to be reacting to it. Suddenly the amulet around the mage's neck flashed a bright red color, and lightning began to arc around the large ring of the machine sparatically, then more frequently. A black and blue void began to fade in, a swirling spiral, the edges of which licked around like an unnatural flame. Yeah... Aramil was watching wide-eyed, studying Magus closely to figure out if he could do that someday... The boy closed his mouth and observed silently. Rubric and Scheema high-fived eachother. Even Magus seemed pleased now... at least he wasn't glaring around at everyone at the moment.

Kimmy looked crestfallen when she heard that she could not help with anything. It all changed when they decided to fire the thing up. She was about to comment but someone stole the words right out of her mouth.
"Wow, that is impressive!" Naome's head peaked out from behind the corner of the wall followed by Tion's quickly afterward. "Good job old man. You actually made something that looks awesome. Now...what does it do?"
Tion resisted the urge to smack his twin upside the head for being such a dim-bit. You don't insult someone like Magus by calling him an old man. He hoped he didn't get too rough with her. He would have to step in if it ever got to that.

Dark watched, obviously pleased, and Shivelle squeezed her mate's hand again, very proud. She also smiled when Naome revealed herself.

At that moment, high above everyone's heads, something strange occurred. Something which this universe had never seen before. A vessel several hundred meters long seemed to slide out of space, though anyone looking at the phenomenon couldn't tell you what it was sliding out of. Thermal dump radiators extended, spewing infrared radiation out into space. Rail gun turrets popped out of their recesses as missile bays opened to vacuum. Sensors deployed and a pair of recon drones were launched. Anton Creideiki awoke in his jumpsleep chamber, blinking away the lingering effects of the jump drugs.
"Anomaly detected!" Came the vaguely masculine voice of SIAM, the ship's AI. "A Multiversal Rift has been generated on the planet's surface. "Magnitude 3.6, event detection: unlikely. Caution: Sensors indicate that ships of the Law have visited this area of space recently. I advise that we jump as soon as possible."
Anton started. "There's a rift on the planet's surface? The gravitic disturbances alone should be making a brand new volcano." Creideiki paused. He was very curious about this rift on the planet's surface, but it would have to wait until another time. if the Law was here, those people were already dead. "Start jump prep. Get us at least three timelines away from here."
SIAM was silent for a few moments, jump alarms went off, alerting a crew that didn't exist that it was time to go into sleep chambers that hadn't been used in years. "Alert! Jump aborted. The fabric of local space is still to fragile to perform another jump."
Anton glanced at the chronometer on his wrist. "Send a recon drone down to the planet's surface. We'll jump after we take a look at this disturbance. Keep the hyperdrive warmed up, though, we may have to jump away from a firefight if the Law shows up."
SIAM obeyed. One of the recon drones orbiting Phoenix fired its fusion drive, accelerating towards the planet at 25 gravities. "Estimated time to drone impact: 15 minutes. Shall I place the ship in orbit around the planet?"
Anton nodded. "Bring us into a low orbit, we'll recover the drone in a launch if we can."
Phoenix ignited her main drives and cruised at a far more leisurely 10 gravities, fusion flame lighting up the dark side of the planet's moon for the first time in thousands of years. If anyone in the room standing in front of the machine ad been outside, they would ahve noticed a new, very bright, star shining in the sky.

Kimmy looked around like someone who had a serious case of paranoia. She didn't see anything out of place so she slowly looked back the portal and let out a few forced laughs. "Heh, if I didn't know better than to trust my instincts I would say something went terribly wrong. But Nothing has blown up so, i guess we are clean." She turned to magus and gave a salute. "Mission complete! Now can we go to...the other side?"
"Yeah! Let's go! Kimmy has a good Idea for once!" Naome slung er arm around the redhead's shoulders and grinned at them. "Let us depart for this mysterious land beyond the cool looking swirly thing."

"I don't feel anything.." remarked Magus, looking forward at his device. "It's set.. but as of yet we don't have any way to set where it will head to.. That is still in development..." he seemed to be looking at the ring judgingly. Old? I'm not old... not yet. It had been so long.. would she recognize him anymore?
He brushed his amulet with his gloved hand for a moment, then turned. "But there is a way back from wherever we go to... This is the key." he said, holding up his most treasured possession. The little amulet made of a red gem, yet glowed a bright jade-green color, fastened in a setting of gold.

Ace leaned against one of the walls, standing apart from the rest of the crowd. He held the front brim of his hat with one hand and seemed to have a large permanent grin on his face. It almost seemed that the flames from the torches nearest to him tried to bend towards his presence, wrapping the out of place looking man in an illuminated veil.
"So basically, wherever it is that thing leads to, so long as you have that talisman, you're the only one with a way back. And, you're the only one that knows how to use it, no less. That seems a little faulty, wouldn't you say?" There was no ill intent in the voice, just a sort of innocent humor, as if he saw a joke in everything that no one else did.

"Yes, I am the only one with it, and I am the only one who knows how it works, but I am not the only one who will benefit from it. When we travel to another location, either a different time or dimension, depending on how this machine will function... it will create a tunnel of sorts. A rift on the other end will open, and generally it is a one-way movement. This Amulet defies that, allowing the rift to reopen, sending the passengers to the last location it connected to. That is my experience anyway..."
Aramil tried to take that in. He thought he had a rough idea of how it worked. Scheema's floppy green ear twitched a bit, and she shook her head, bopping the side of it. Rubric seemed oblivious as ever...

"Randomly traveling across the timeline and dimensional planes.. Isn't that a little.. dangerous, to say the least? My point was simply that, if something happens to you, then no one would be able to return. There are untold dimensions, not to mention an infinite span of timeline.. Who's to say what luck and fate have in mind?"
That permanent grin lessened a touch as his eyes rested on the swirling mass. "And, it's not like getting back alive and 'alone' would be the only problem.. Are you so sure you can protect all of these here?"

"What do you mean, 'these?'" Shivelle hissed. She did not like anyone underestimating her mate. "We're all beings. And most of us can take care of ourselves."
